Inlays & Onlays

What are inlays and onlays?

We can help you combat cavities or repair damaged/decayed teeth with inlays and onlays. While smaller cavities are handled with fillings and major cases of decay need dental crowns, dental inlays & onlays are the perfect middle ground for cavities that are neither minor nor severe. Rather than being directly placed on to the tooth and set, these products are created beforehand in our state-of-the-art laboratory and then cemented on to your tooth.

Inlays are designed to fit specifically over the chewing area of your tooth where as onlays cover the entire cusp of the tooth. Porcelain and composite inlays and onlays are designed to resemble a natural tooth but gold inlays & onlays are recommended for patients who have a heavy bite or grind their teeth often. Upon initial evaluation, our dentist will be able to determine which material would suit your smile best.

Have a damaged tooth?

Are you eligible for inlays & onlays?

Our dentists may suggest dental inlays and onlays if you have:

  • Decayed Teeth
  • Broken Teeth
  • Fractured/Large Fillings

Alongside this, patients will also need a sufficient amount of tooth structure to support this restoration. We’ll be able to assess your eligibility when you come in for your consultation. If you are eligible for inlays or onlays, this will be an unnoticeable, long-term solution, which will be resistant to wear & tear and quite worth the investment.

The Process

Receiving an inlay will take place over the course of two appointments. Bear in mind that getting an onlay follows a similar procedure:

  • Impressions (moulds) will be taken to create your custom-fitted inlays and a temporary filling
  • The area of decay or any old filling material will be removed & thoroughly cleaned
  • The temporary filling will be applied until your second appointment
  • During your second appointment, your inlay will be carefully bonded into place

Inlays Vs Fillings

Fillings are the best solution for small cavities. These are fitted in to the cavity in a single appointment after the decay has been removed. Inlay & onlays are designed to tackle bigger cavities and are fitted in a manner that takes away less of the natural tooth. These products are highly durable and designed to withstand pressure over a long duration of time. The best option for your individual smile can be assessed upon consultation!

Aftercare for your inlays & onlays

Take care of your inlays and onlays well and these restorations usually won’t need replacing for another 20 to 30 years. We recommend avoiding hot/cold foods and beverages as well as hard/sticky foods right after your procedure. The most important step would be to stick to a consistent oral hygiene routine where you brush and floss daily. Additionally, coming in to see us for regular cleanings every 6 months at the very least will ensure your oral health is in tiptop shape and that your restorations are functioning well.
