How do I know if I need Braces?

Braces are commonly associated with younger individuals, but they are suitable for patients of all ages, each with unique reasons for seeking orthodontic treatment. Here are some signs that you might need braces:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite/Underbite/Crossbite
  • Crooked teeth
  • Poor positioning of jaws

What are the Advantages of Getting Braces?

The advantages of getting braces go far beyond having an aesthetically pleasing smile! Some of the other benefits include:

  • Your teeth are easier to clean effectively, drastically reducing your risk of decay and bad breath.
  • Straighter teeth which will help evenly redistribute pressure across your smile and place less stress on your jaw, decreasing the likelihood of tooth wear and tear.
  • Improves your ability to speak and chew your food properly!

What are the types Braces available

We have four main types of dental braces you can get at Wyndham Dental depending on your needs. They are:

Metal Braces

As the name suggests, metal brackets and wires are used to place constant pressure on each tooth.

Lingual Braces

These are made out of metal brackets and wires. Over the years these dental braces have gotten noticeably smaller. This type of brace is the most affordable.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are designed with the same size and shape as metal braces but with tooth-coloured brackets. Some even have the option of clear wires.

Lingual Braces

These are similar to metal braces but placed on the inside of the teeth to be unnoticeable from the outside.

Invisalign

Unlike the others, Invisalign has clear plastic removable aligners that are replaced every few weeks. These are only applicable to teenagers and adults for mild orthodontic conditions.

What are the steps to getting Braces?

  1. On your first visit, x-rays and impressions will be taken of your mouth to create custom-fitted braces.
  2. Your bonding appointment may last about 2 hours. Our dentist will insert a device into your mouth to keep it dry.
  3. The braces will be placed using an adhesive and hardened using a curing light to set the bond.
  4. Our orthodontist will then run the archwire through the braces and hold it together using ligature bands.
  5. You will have follow-up appointments every 4 to 8 weeks to adjust your braces as your teeth move into place.

Taking care of your Orthodontic Braces

You will need to floss daily and brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste after each meal. Our dentist at Wyndham Dental Clinic will give you a step-by-step guide on how to do this with braces.

We advise avoiding sugary and, hard foods that will stick stubbornly to your braces. Once your treatment period is over, you will have to wear a retainer for at least 6 months to ensure your teeth don’t move back to their original positions.

FAQs

On average, our patients need to wear their braces for a period of 1 to 2 years. For more complex cases, this can extend to 3 years.

Depending on the type of braces you choose and the complexity of your case, braces can cost from $6000 to $15000 for a treatment period of around 18 months. Upon your consultation, we’ll be able to provide you with an exact cost.

While wearing your braces does not affect your ability to take part in sports, we do recommend investing in a mouthguard to wear when playing contact sports to prevent abrasions. You can easily get your custom-fitted mouthguard from Wyndham Dental Clinic!
