How to Get Rid of Braces Pain Safe and Fast
Getting your braces is an exciting step towards a straighter and healthier smile, but to be honest it was not a pleasant experience during the first few days. To say the least, this time period is pretty rough to get through. Whether you’ve just had your braces fitted or your orthodontist adjusted your wires, some discomfort is perfectly normal.
The good news? It’s temporary and manageable.
Here’s how to ease that soreness safely and fast with Wyndham Dental, so you can get back to smiling with confidence!
Why Braces Cause Pain in the First Place
Remedies can be discussed, but it’s better suited to know what’s actually happening in your mouth to treat it. Braces work by applying gentle, consistent pressure to shift your teeth into better alignment. As your teeth move, the surrounding gums and ligaments stretch slightly, which can cause tenderness or soreness. This is especially so in the first week after fitting or after adjustments. You might also feel irritation from the metal brackets or wires rubbing against your inner cheeks, tongue or lips and this can be a problem. But it’s important to know that all of this is completely normal and a sign that your braces are doing their job.
Still, there’s no need to suffer in silence.
1. Try an Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever
If the pain feels more than just mild discomfort, over-the-counter painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen can help. These medications reduce inflammation and ease soreness, especially during the first few days after getting your braces or after a tightening appointment. Just remember to always follow the dosage instructions and check with your dentist or pharmacist if you’re unsure which medication is best for you.
2. Use Orthodontic Wax to Prevent Irritation
Those tiny metal brackets can sometimes rub against the inside of your mouth and cause painful sores. That’s where orthodontic wax comes in handy. Simply roll a small piece of wax between your fingers and press it over the bracket or wire that’s bothering you. It acts as a smooth barrier between your braces and your soft tissues, giving your mouth time to heal while preventing further irritation.
Pro tip: keep a small box of wax in your bag or pocket so you can reapply it anytime you need relief on the go.
3. Apply a Cold Compress or Ice Pack
Cold therapy is one of the simplest and fastest ways to ease braces pain. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your mouth or jaw for about 10 minutes can help numb soreness and reduce swelling. If you don’t have an ice pack, sipping on ice-cold water or sucking on ice cubes (gently!) can also bring temporary relief. Just avoid chewing ice, as it could damage your braces or teeth.
4. Stick to Soft Foods for a Few Days
Crunchy, chewy or hard foods are a no-go when your teeth are tender. Instead, opt for soft, easy-to-eat options like mashed potatoes, yoghurt, smoothies, soups, scrambled eggs and pasta. Not only will this reduce discomfort while eating, but it also helps prevent damage to your braces. Once the soreness eases, you can gradually reintroduce firmer foods, but just be mindful to avoid sticky snacks or anything that might get stuck between your brackets.
5. Rinse with Warm Salt Water
This age-old remedy really works. A simple saltwater rinse can soothe sore gums, heal mouth sores and reduce inflammation caused by your braces. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth gently for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. Repeat this two to three times a day for the best results. It’s safe, natural and surprisingly effective.
6. Stay Hydrated and Avoid Acidic Drinks
Dry mouth can make braces pain worse because your lips, cheeks and tongue are more likely to rub against the brackets. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth moist and comfortable. Avoid acidic drinks like fizzy sodas, citrus juices or sports drinks as they can irritate sensitive tissues and weaken enamel around your brackets. Instead stick to water or milk, which are gentler on your teeth
7. Massage Your Gums
A gum massage might sound odd, but it can do wonders. Using a clean finger, lightly rub your gums in a circular motion. This increases blood flow and helps reduce the stiffness and soreness caused by braces. For extra relief, try rinsing your mouth with warm water before and after the massage. It will help relax the tissues even more.
