Dental Veneers

What are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is essentially a custom-made shell that encases an individual tooth and is made up of tooth-like material (porcelain or resin composite materials) which looks as aesthetic and natural as a natural tooth, concealing flaws in your smile. Whether you have discoloured teeth, chipped edges, small missing gaps, or other minor issues with your smile, dental veneers are one of the best options for achieving that winning smile.

The natural spectrum of tooth shades is very wide and there are many different shades of the natural tooth, depending on your genes, ethnicity, age, habits, and environment amongst other factors.

Hence, veneers can be done in any shade to combat that variability. Sometimes more than one shade is required for a single tooth to enhance the natural effect of the veneer.

What Are Veneers Made Out Of?

Veneers are of two types, namely Porcelain and Composite Resin. Depending on your individual needs and preferences, both materials can be used to make your veneers. Composite holds the advantage of being more conservative to the tooth structure and requires minimal to no preparation of the tooth surface before their placement, which is completed on the same day.

Porcelain veneers are made of porcelain, as the name suggests, are longer lasting and require at least 1mm of your enamel surface to be shaved off and removed in order to be anatomically constructed and custom-fabricated for your teeth at a dental laboratory.

Do I Need Veneers?

Veneers could be the answer to your discomfort with the appearance of your smile, especially the front few which attract attention right away when you speak, laugh, or smile. You might consider getting veneers if your teeth are heavily stained due to medications, or are deeply yellowish owing to many years of smoking even though you’ve tried whitening procedures and have quit smoking.
Other reasons to get veneers include:

  • Shorter teeth (due to genetics)
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Large gaps between teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

Veneers can effectively overcome all of these concerns since you can choose for them to look exactly how you want your new smile- we will custom design your smile with you at Wyndham Dental Solutions, ensuring you love the final results!

The best time to get them is when you have already tried other cosmetic treatments and they didn’t work well for you. If your teeth are getting damaged due to your habits, beyond the point of repair, you may want to consider rehabilitation of your smile before it gets worse and the restoration of your smile becomes more challenging.

How do Veneers work?

After you have visited us for your initial consultation at Wyndham Dental Solutions, and have decided upon an appropriate tooth shade and which veneers you prefer and would give you the results you desire, our team of dentists will guide you through the procedure and even show you a custom designed before and after smile to help you visualize what you will be achieving for your smile with us!

The tooth structure usually requires to be trimmed, and shaped according to the type of veneer intended to be placed. This is essential for proper retention and stability of the veneer following all protocols and theoretical guidelines.

For porcelain veneers, the teeth are prepared by removing about 1mm of enamel from the surface of the tooth. The height of the tooth is also decreased by 1.5mm so that the final veneer to be placed does not give additional length and size to the teeth, which could cause them to look bulky and unnatural.

After the teeth are prepared, an impression is taken and sent to the laboratory for the veneers to be fabricated. While the permanent ones are being made, a temporary set will be given for the patient to wear. This usually takes about a week or two. Once they return from the lab, the veneers are placed in the patient’s mouth at our clinic for a try-in, and minor adjustments can be further made to them before they are permanently cemented onto your teeth.

Composite veneers may also require minimal preparation of the teeth before they are directly bonded onto the tooth surfaces, layer by layer, putting to use the artistry of our smile experts. The final outcome is seen on the very same day and you can leave our clinic smiling from ear to ear, loving your new-found confidence!
